Biographical information
Bonnie Harris has a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education with a specialization in parent/child development from Bank Street College in New York. She founded The Parent Guidance Center in Peterborough, New Hampshire in 1990, and co-founded The Family Center, the result of a merger and now a full-service community resource center. Currently Harris speaks and gives workshops internationally. She is the Director of Bonnie Harris, LLC, a company formed to manage her multi-media work, with speaking engagements, workshops, and trainings.

Her first book, When Your Kids Push Your Buttons and What You Can Do About It (Warner Books, 2003), has received only positive endorsements. Chosen as one of the New York Post’s top ten parenting books, it was given a stellar review. The personal reviews on Amazon as well as the hundreds of emails Harris receives attest to the success of this work in improving people’s lives. Here is one example:

I just finished reading When Your Kids Push Your Buttons. I am a 30-year-old mother of an 8-year-old little girl with a lot of attitude. This book has changed our relationship. I realized her attitude was because of the way her father and I spoke to her and not letting her be who she is. She is a wonderful girl and we were letting our agenda be more important than hers. I have changed how I talk to her and how I listen to her. She feels respected so she is giving respect. I want to thank you, reading your book was the best thing I could have done for my beautiful daughter.

- Stacy Johnson from San Diego

Harris’ appearance on The Today Show led to radio and television interviews nationwide. She has been quoted in the Science Times Section of The New York Times, Parents Magazine, Parenting, Good Housekeeping, American Baby, Family Circle, Essence, and has written a feature for Working Mother Magazine. Keynote addresses and workshops have been presented in Riverside, CA, St. Louis, MO, New York City, Portland, ME, Princeton, NJ, Green Bay, WI, Boston and Cape Cod, Fairfield, CT, and all over New Hampshire among many other locations across the country. Internationally, Harris has given workshops in Adelaide, Australia, with return trips to London and Gloucestershire, England. An invitation to speak at conferences in Manila and Singapore provided the opportunity to teach several international groups of parents. When Your Kids Push Your Buttons has been published in six countries and five additional languages.

A When Your Kids Push Your Buttons eight-week workshop has been filmed by Boston’s WGBH public television for a 2006 pledge drive. Viewers will see Harris talk about the workshop in an on-air special pledge program, see clips from her class with in-home segments, and will be able purchase a book and a DVD set of the workshop.

Being a passionate advocate for parents and children, Harris is dedicated to supporting parents in being their best with their children. She is the mother of two twenty-somethings.

Discussion topics
Parenting Workshops and Talks:

  • When Your Kids Push Your Buttons
The Buttons Workshop will help you stop the cycle of action and reaction from spinning once and for all. This workshop will help you identify your buttons, exactly what pushes them, what they represent, and how to effectively change your reactions and regain your authority.
  • Sowing the Seeds of Non-Violence: Parenting for a New Age
Parents need to take responsibility for how they are parenting but in an atmosphere of support rather than blame. Non-violence begins at home. When children are respected as equal human beings they treat others that way too. Punishment is easy; fostering responsible behavior is not. This talk will outline the truth about the effects of punishment and what you can do differently.
  • Getting to the Root: Understanding What Your Child is Trying to Tell You
This talk will give you a new perspective so you can watch your children's behavior with new eyes, learn to interpret the behavior and understand its clues, and respond to it in ways that will cure the problem rather than cover it up or pushit further in.
  • Why Won't You Ever Listen? Understanding Connective Communication
Learn how to find out what your child is thinking and feeling. Make connections with your child that last a lifetime. Understand why children become "parent-deaf" and learn the most powerful communication skill a parent can have.
  • Parenting Siblings Realistically
Learn why your children fight, gain realistic expectations of their relationship and learn how to encourage and support a compatible relationship. Become a coach rather than a referee and learn how to intervene, not interfere so they will learn how to solve their own disputes.
  • Understanding and Managing the "Difficult" Child
Accepting our children for who they are is the important gift a parent can give. This talk will help parents understand the many aspects of their children's inborn temperaments and how they fit or do not fit with their own.
