Discussion topics

  • 1. "Israel's Defense Forces - The American Connection." Even scholars of Israeli and American Jewish history are surprised to discover that North Americans made such a meaningful contribution to Israel's victory in the War of Independence. Rudy Augarten, for example, was the Israeli Air Force's leading Ace of the War for Independence. Paul Shulman, an Annapolis graduate, was the first commander of the Israeli Navy. These Americans, along with more than a thousand others, fought for Israel in her darkest hour and helped to establish the State of Israel.
  • 2. "Living with Terrorism - An American's Experience in Israel." Just five weeks before the Intifada, my wife and I moved to Israel to start a new life together. We learned to adapt to a new way of life. We lifted our arms to be wanded as we entered supermarkets, restaurants, and even the local video store. Upon returning to the United States in 2002, we felt a strange vulnerability at the relative lack of security in America. We kept our apartment in Jerusalem and return there every summer, continuing to live the dual-life of an American-Israeli.
