Biographical information
Larry Kane is known as an electrifying speaker, with strong contacts in Washington and the Middle East. He has traveled to Israel and the Middle East 6 times in the last 8 years, notably in 1998 for a special broadcast commemorating the 50th anniversary of the state. In 2000, the publication of his book Larry Kane's Philadelphia caused a bit of an uproar when he challenged Jewish broadcasters to commit to the community in a public way. In public, Kane said, "there is no reason for people with a Jewish heritage who are public people to hide or sublimate their backgrounds for fear of public backlash. They should be as committed to the Jewish community as people of other faiths are committed to theirs." Kane has finished a second book, Ticket to Ride (Running Press, Fall 2003, with CD) that chronicles his experiences as the only American journalist to travel with the Beatles during their 1964-65 tours of America. Dick Clark is writing the foreword. Kane has covered virtually every national political convention since 1964 and every Presidential inauguration since 1973. He has interviewed every President from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush and has covered the Middle East peace talks; the return of the American hostages to Wiesbaden, West Germany; and many other key events since the 1960's. Prior to joining KYW-3 in 1993, Kane was the 6 and 11 p.m. co-anchor at WCAU-TV in Philadelphia since 1978. Before joining WCAU, Kane anchored the 11 p.m. newscast for WABC-TV in New York. Previously, he had been the anchor for Philadelphia's WPVI-TV for eight years, where he propelled the station to first place in the news ratings in a one year period from 1970 to 1971. The success of his Action News format changed the face of contemporary broadcasting in the early 1970's. Kane began his career in broadcast journalism in Miami, Florida, first at WQAM and later at WAME and WFUN. At WAME in Miami, Kane became the first U.S. news correspondent to break the story of the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961. Discussion topics
