Discussion topics
- The Seven Species: Food & The Human Spirit--The Bible mentions "7 Species": Wheat, Barley, Grapes, Pomegranates, Figs, Olive (oil) & (Date) Honey, as the foods most characterizing the ancient Land of Israel. Yet each is a metaphor for a host of mystical, symbolic, spiritual, artistic and practical meanings that connect us with the earth - and as science reveals - contain nutrients like antioxidants and phytoestrogens that help prevent heart disease, and even cancer. There is more to food than meets the eye and palate; and we can harness this information to give new awareness, depth and meaning to our lives.
The lecture will include a PowerPoint presentation.
- Wheat, Wine & Olive Oil: The History Of Jewish Holiday Cuisine--Phyllis Glazer reveals the surprising origins of the ancient Jewish holidays, and their profound link to specific signs of nature and the produce of the earth in that season. She explains why and how the holidays changed radically, into ones our ancestors would scarcely recognize today. Inspired by flavors and fragrances from the ancient land of Israel, throughout the centuries and the Diaspora, Phyllis describes how it's possible to create delicious, healthy holiday cuisine based on natural ingredients, that not only tastes good, but also holds actual significance - with dishes that reflect biblical roots, ancient traditions, or symbols gleaned from Jewish mystical tradition.
